How we calculate your pump-and-haul savings.

The savings calculator on our commercial page uses publicly available industry data and conservative assumptions. This page explains every input, every source, and everything the model deliberately leaves out.

The formula
Fleet size × Pump trips / week × Cost per trip × 52 weeks = Annual savings

Conservative by design. Does not include compost revenue, fertilizer revenue, or reduced scheduling labor.

The model estimates annual pump-and-haul cost eliminated.

When you deploy Virro Locale or Vault, you stop paying for vacuum truck service. The calculator estimates how much of that cost disappears from your operations — based on three inputs you control: how many units you operate, how often they are serviced, and what you pay per service visit.

The result is a floor estimate — the minimum savings before any resource recovery revenue is added. The actual economic benefit of a Virro deployment is higher in every real-world case.

Where the numbers come from.

Fleet size
5 – 500 units

Number of Locale or Vault units in active deployment. One Virro unit per porta-potty or vault replaced, 1:1.

Pump trips / week
1 – 10 trips

How often a vacuum truck services your fleet. Industry average for active event fleets is 2–4 trips/week. Construction sites typically lower; festivals much higher.

Cost per trip
$50 – $200

Fully loaded pump-out cost including truck, labor, dumping fees, and disposal. The PSAI (Portable Sanitation Association International) puts the national average at $75–$110 per single-unit service call.

Source: Portable Sanitation Association International (PSAI) industry cost data. Regional variation is significant — coastal metros and remote sites typically run 20–40% above national average.

What the calculator deliberately does not include.

The savings figure shown is a floor. The following real costs are excluded from the model — meaning the true economic benefit of switching to Virro is higher in every deployment:

Excluded from the savings calculation
Scheduling labor — staff time coordinating pump truck logistics
Regulatory overhead — compliance documentation and disposal reporting
Odor complaint handling — event staff time and reputational cost
Emergency service premiums — surcharges for unscheduled pump-outs
Compost revenue — Class A humanure compost at $45–$180/yd³
Urine fertilizer revenue — RO-concentrated NPK at ~$2.40/L

What your waste is actually worth.

Beyond eliminating pump costs, Virro deployments generate two recoverable resource streams. These are not included in the calculator — they are additive on top of the savings shown.

Stream 01 — Humanure compost
$45–$180

per yd³ · Class A finished compost · market range, regional · sold to landscapers, regenerative farms, land-reclamation projects

Stream 02 — Urine fertilizer
$2.40

per L concentrate · RO-concentrated NPK · via PeeCycling tech · shelf-stable, pathogen-free

Total avoided cost
$3,200+

per unit / year · operator average, 3-event/year site · pump truck, labor, disposal, regulatory overhead combined

Pilot partners share anonymized revenue data with Virro. These ranges are updated as real deployment data accumulates. Specific offtake contract values vary by region and buyer.

What the model does not capture.

The calculator assumes year-round operation. Seasonal operators should apply their active months as a fraction of 52 weeks. A festival operator running 20 events per year at 3 pump trips each is different from a municipal park running continuous service.

The model also assumes full fleet conversion. Operators who convert a portion of their fleet will see proportional savings. Site-specific factors — access restrictions, pump truck availability, local disposal costs — will affect real outcomes.

If you want a site-specific analysis rather than a general estimate, contact our commercial team. We will prepare a custom cost comparison based on your actual fleet size, service frequency, and location.
